Cloud computing can enable businesses to receive a new IT system "in a few minutes", making it an ideal way to upgrade a computer network.
That is according to Chris Knowles, the enterprise cloud architect for virtualisation company Vmware, who told cnet.com that cloud will have "huge implications for the future of IT" as firms benefit from cost reductions as they use more hosted services.
He added that cloud is a "fundamental paradigm shift in computing" with many businesses revolutionising their on-site IT systems.
Technology company Ovum predicted last week that cloud computing would "continue to grow steadily" across 2011 and named it among its top ten trends for the year ahead.
Mr Knowles told the news provider that speed is the key to luring businesses into changing their computer systems.
"The speed with which an end-user can satisfy their requirement for a new system in the cloud is one of the single most compelling reasons people want to move to the cloud," he said.
"This is not simply convenience, but a real enabler of faster time-to-market and greater freedom to innovate."
