Clothing ecommerce has doubled over the last five years, research says
Clothing-themed ecommerce websites have increased in numbers recently, according to new research which found that sales of apparel have doubled over the last five years.
Mintel's latest report revealed that £4.3 billion worth of clothes were bought through ecommerce websites while purchases have also grown by 152 per cent over the last five years.
The Daily Telegraph reports that fashion outlets, such as Zara, H&M and Topshop, did not have websites where people could buy clothes until a few years ago.
Neil Saunders, of retail consultancy Verdict, told the news provider that it has become easier for people to shop through the internet.
"Many now prefer to buy clothes online and try them on in the privacy of their own home than in a changing room," he said.
"They get around the problem by ordering multiple sizes and sending back the ones they don't want. Of course, this can be costly for the retailers that pick up the cost of this."
Suzy Radcliffe, retail strategist at Wolff Olins, said earlier this week that businesses must ensure their online customer service staff are well trained.
