Apple has won a dispute with the owner of ipods.com that will result in the tech giant acquiring the domain name for no fee.
The California-based company filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) over the web address, which was registered on April 28th 2002 - around half a year after the release of the first iPod.
WIPO panellist David Cairns ruled in favour of Apple, meaning the domain name must be transferred, although it is currently unclear who owns the address.
Although Apple won the rights to ipods.com without having to pay anything, the company has previously had to shell out large sums to take control of similar addresses.
In 2007, businessman Michael Kovatch was paid an undisclosed seven-figure sum for the domain name iPhone.com just a matter of months after the smartphone was released.
Apple sold 7.54 million iPods in the three months to June 25th, representing a decline of 20 per cent on the corresponding period of 2010.
