Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been advised to combine their social and marketing strategies in a bid to increase custom.
Microsoft's group search manager Colm Bracken has urged companies to rethink their choice of keywords used to attract consumers through search engines.
His recommendation comes after the release of the Internet Advertising Bureau's Search for Integration report, which aims to educate businesses about the role of search engines in marketing strategies.
Although the study primarily caters to big-name brands, Mr Bracken urged SMEs to think about the importance of keywords when developing online plans.
He urged managers to "look more typically for keywords that include their brand" in a bid to avoid using terms also utilised by competitors.
The Microsoft-sponsored report was created after 99 per cent of businesses revealed they could do more to integrate their search and social priorities.
