Toshiba breaches Data Protection Act

Toshiba breaches Data Protection Act

Toshiba Information Systems (UK) breached the Data Protection Act after an online security flaw led to the personal details of 20 competition entrants being leaked.

It was revealed to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) that the personal details of individuals registered for a competition were accessible, including their names, addresses and contact information.

As a result, the ICO deemed that the company's security measures were not sufficient to detect the website error, which had been made by a third party developer.

Stephen Eckersley, the ICO's head of enforcement, said: "It is vital that, as ever-increasing amounts of our personal information are collected online, companies have the necessary safeguards in place to keep this information secure."

"We would urge other UK organisations with interactive websites to make sure they have suitable checks in place before collecting peoples’ details online."

As a result of the data breach, Toshiba has signed an undertaking in which it pledges to "enforce the appropriate and proportionate data security testing on relevant web applications before they are launched", so it will have to monitor its partners more closely.

Fortunately for Toshiba, the ICO deemed that the leaked data was not sensitive enough to warrant a monetary penalty.
