This configuration is ideal for small to medium websites that require sustainable performance, but not a high level of redundancy.

The configuration entails a single load balancer distributing load across two web servers which place requests on a single back end database server.

This solution can maintain sustained throughput for a small to medium website cost effectively. It does not however offer redundancy, and would not be suitable for a business critical website.

High Availability VM Hosting

Fully Redundant, Load-balanced, Virtual Dedicated Hosting

For websites that require a high degree of availability in addition to the capacity to service thousands of transactions per second this configuration would be ideal.

All components within the solution are redundant with a traditional three tier application design hosted behind a pair of Zeus Load Balancers ensuring load is distributed across the first tier of web servers.

This configuration will greatly reduce planned downtime, which is the greatest source of downtime within any environment, as each component can have maintenance work carried out on it individually without disrupting the other components of the solution. All environments will always require a degree of preventative maintenance. If the availability of your website is critical to your business, then this solution will ensure that normal maintenance does not have an impact on your business.

Unplanned downtime is also catered for within this solution as, should there be a failure on any individual components, there is redundancy to ensure it does not result in a failure of service.

The only type of failure this solution does not cater for is potential site failure, which is very unlikely due to use of VMware spanning the solution across multiple hosts within a secure managed data centre.

Many small companies do not have the IT skills or facilities to manage their required IT environments. This sample configuration for a simple Microsoft based IT back office solution meets the requirements of many small companies, and has the capacity to cater for up to 100 typical users.

This environment is typical of what many companies deploy in house. It only needs to be available during working hours and a limited amount of downtime is tolerated. Consequently, having high redundancy does not justify the cost, and with VMware as the infrastructure platform delivering the solution, a higher degree of availability over physical solutions is nevertheless assured.
